What is Beatboxing?
Beatboxing is the musical art of using one’s mouth, lips, tongue, throat and voice to mimic drum-machines, turntables, percussion and other sounds from technology and nature. It is rooted in African American and Latinx experiences and through Hip Hop culture in the United States, and an essential part of the history and evolution of human vocal mimicry stretching back to early human times. Beatboxing is considered to be the “5th” element of Hip Hop and is also described as “The Universal Language!” A growing practice and subculture in the Global North and South it connects people across economic and social differences creating THE SOUNDATION!

Who is MC Eucalips?
Just some dude who makes weird sounds with his mouth……
MC Eucalips also known as Cameron Martin Campbell is a globally recognized beatboxer, mouth harp player, percussionist, emcee and ethnomusicologist. A Celtic Scotsman, born in India to an American father (also born in India) and an Australian mother, he spent his younger years in India and Indonesia, before moving to New York at the age of 15. Influenced by the social activism of his parents who worked community development, he grew up playing drums and rapping in revolutionary rap punk and funk groups. He first heard beatboxing in 1999 after his friend gave him Make The Music by Rahzel. This changed his life. Already familiar with the Indian vocal percussive traditions in India through his father a percussionist and flute player who specialised in avant garde jazz and Nepali folktunes, the rhythmic rants of the birds, and Scatman John, Rahzel opened his ears to a whole new sonic landscape. Years later after honing his craft and experimenting with different sounds, he began to compete in battles. He reached top 16 in the 2015 American Beatbox Championships. After being diagnosed with chronic lyme disease he began experimenting on himself, attempting to see if he could use his own sounds to destroy the baterial spirochetes in his body, and it just him feel better and helped his wellbeing over all. Perhaps because of oxygenation to the brain, and the similaries to pranayam yoga. He started to understand the connections between beatboxing, breath control and sound healing, as well as its roots in radical and revolutionary thought and amplifying marginalized voices. A polyglot who lived in a variety of different cultures, he admired that beatbox was a mode of communication that transcended local linguistic, social and economic differences. He is inspired by bio-acoustics and electronic machines and the mimicry and merging of nature and technology. He has performed and produced beatboxing and hip hop events all over the world focusing initally on India and the United States. He has co-published a paper on beatbox culture with socio-linguist Jaspal Naveel Singh and conducts research and delivers presentations on beatboxing globally. MC Eucalips, has also worked extensively in sustainable development ad social impact initiatives in the United States and the global South.
